1. Look at the logs
2. Leave a couple of ssh sessions logged into it, one with htop, one
with iotop running and see what they are doing when things hang.
When I had a problem with similar symptoms, it turned out that my list
of recorded programs was so long (I had never bothered clearing it out
because I hadn't realised it could be an issue) that the scheduler was
hanging.
I cleared out all the old news programs, programs whose recording
rules I had deleted, etc., and the problem went away.
