Thank you both Peter and Mike for your responses. I modified my RPi2 to
use the settings indicated by Peter (e.g., video profile has OSD
renderer softblend.)

With the RPi2 set to automatically login to a desktop, I am able to open
a terminal window and start mythfrontend with:

export MYTHTVDIR=$HOME/mythtv-raspi-v0.27.6-62-gbb9eec4/usr
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$MYTHTVDIR/lib \
    $MYTHTVDIR/bin/mythfrontend

This runs mythfrontend in a window. To remove the need for the full
desktop I modified my RPi2 to automatically login to a console only.
Now I can start mythfrontend with (startx):

export MYTHTVDIR=$HOME/mythtv-raspi-v0.27.6-62-gbb9eec4/usr
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$MYTHTVDIR/lib \
    startx $MYTHTVDIR/bin/mythfrontend

Video plays back fairly smoothly.

There are some issues with the placement of the MythTV menu and shows on
my screen. If I ignore these screen issues for now, on some shows I can
toggle the subtitle enabled/disabled button using "T". This displays
"ATSC CC 1: English On/Off"; however no subtitles are visible on my
monitor screen.

All of the shows I tested have subtitles when played on my Intel
i5-2500K backend/frontend combo.

Is there some other setting I might be missing to get subtitles to display?

Regards,
Curtis
