[mythtv-users] New install stuck at frontend setup

With Ubuntu, you'd have to give root a password, then you could SSH
in. That's a security feature, as it's impossible to login as root
with no password set.
The proper practice was outlined by Thomas. SSH in as the user you
created, then sudo your commands as needed.
