I've had RAID arrays of various types and sizes (1 and 5) and I've set up smartctl to email me on failures.

So far, I've experienced new drives dying, old drive dying, bad cables, bad SATA controllers...

It's been very helpful and at a minimum should be set up all the time in ANY system.
