First thanks for all the suggestions :-)

I tried to answer all the obvious questions in my post: ip addresses, remote sql access, port numbers etc
I reverted to building myth (I grabbed the latest snapshot mythtv-0.27.4.tar.gz rather than using git) and lo and behold everything works as it ought.

uPnP to my samsung TV proclaims ‘unsupported file type’ even on files I used to play. 
Does the uPnP server advertize differantly to what it did? No response and I’ll dive into the src and play with wireshark, but someone may have an answer and save me hours.

Meanwhile I cannot believe arch made non-working packages. I still cannot fathom what is going on.
