It is really not a good idea to run either your backend or mythtv-setup as root, 
as you could break many things by doing so.

These days, there is absolutely no need for this requirement. Once upon a time 
it used to be necessary for some users in order to get round permissions 
problems with capture devices, etc. Most modern distros handle this scenario 
sanely these days.

Bottom line is: run mythtv-setup as the mythtv user, the channel icons will be 
downloaded into an internally provided Storage Group directory which defaults to 
a directory under the user running setup.

If you want this somewhere else, since the mythtv user typically is created 
under /var/lib and you might want to use space on another drive, then create a 
Storage Group called "ChannelIcons" and create your directory under it (before 
downloading the icons!).
