There is 8G of ram available on the gentoo system. I'm using the system
monitor on KDE to measure memory usage.

I ran the same mythtv test on another computer with arch w/ 8G ram and
basically got the same result of increasing memory use. The memory usage
started out 190M and ended up at 460M.
