I found OpenElec to be really simple to set up.  It’s built for this
purpose.  It may take some tweaking to get it working well ( I posted my
experience and tips for that a few weeks ago).

Mythfrontend has only recently become an option, thanks to Lawrence Rust’s
great work.   Personally, I think mythfrontend has better UX than
Openelec/Kodi.  But, Kodi is more mature at this point and has near perfect
playback.

8GB µSD cards are pretty cheap..  grab a couple and try multiple options.
I switch between Openelec/Kodi and Raspian/Mythfrontend.
