I would tend to agree, and that is why (I presume) there is a
poll, to gauge interest.
There is the CAPEX and OPEX issues. My "guess" is that
the OPEX is low, so even a few long term subscribers and
new users that want fixes and/or latest and greatest might
make the plan viable. The CAPEX, on the other hand, seems
likely to be high enough so that a true kickstarter (or equivalent)
is needed to get real funds for the real engineering (you can't
(easily) back out of a kickstarter unlike a random poll). But
even the effort to build such a campaign is not worthwhile if
you only have 5 interested people (unless one of them has
the deep pockets to support MythTV and has been hiding
in the shadows all these years, waiting for someone to ask
for money).
I think the poll is likely missing one important question
(which was mentioned in that thread) which is how much?
As I mentioned, I might be willing to contribute towards
(say) a kickstarter campaign as a minor supporter for
some modest amount ($5/10/20?), without paying the full backer
level that actually receives working code (that level is likely
to be much more than the modest number I am envisioning
I could justify contributing for the good of the community).
But even the initial "would you pay" poll may produce
valuable information.
If anyone has a good idea as to how to get a higher
percentage of participation in the poll (from people who
are users of MythTV but are currently not active
participants in the email list or the forum), now might
be a great time to speak up. I will assert that the
same (couple of dozen) people who are the usual posters
have not been proven to be representative of the
community at large, or of their interests.
