It's what I normally do.

I looked up the differences between the S states.

S0 is fully awake
S1 and S2 are sleep modes
S3 is suspend where only ram stays powered on
S4 is hibernate to disk which in essence is the same as
S5 which is power of put still connected to the power supply.

If usb, ps/2, lan or other busses keep their power connected is not
defined and is regulated by the wakeup events etc in the bios or by
jumpers on the board.

What I ment by my previous question is the bios setting 'Suspend
mode'. You have it set to auto. If one of the alternatives is S4 you
can try hibernate to disk, where power consumption is equal to power
off but possibly your usb bus stays powered. You then have to use
pm-hibernate i.s.o. pm-suspend. The downside is that both hibernating
and waking up take more time, but less then a full power cycle. The
plus side is you can unplug it just like with full power down.
