According to the display on its UPS, my 10 years-old (surprisingly)
uses no more kilowatts when suspended to RAM than when powered off
(but still plugged in). Or, at least, if there is a difference it does
not seem to be meaningful.

I haven't figured out how to get pm-hibernate to work, but given the
above suspend-to-RAM meets my needs, and being able to wake up the
frontend within five seconds (one remote button toggles between sleep
and wake) is great.
