I understand your confusion... however that particular idiom (or similar)
is EXTREMELY common in English speaking technology circles for a very long
time. If you have never heard it before, take a moment to remember it as
it will not be the last time you see it.

As far as the RAID / Backup argument... I have never seen literature on
RAID that didn't include some sort of disclaimer about how RAID is not a
substitute for backups. Most pro's would tell you that RAID's primary
purpose is to prevent downtime, not dataloss. While in some extreme cases
several layers of redundancy, including RAID, may be used to ensure the
preservation of critical data (bank transactions for example), RAID will
still run back ups at a regular interval.

Personally, I have a 3tb drive that I use rsnapshot to back up important
data on... my backup drive sits in a firesafe, and I pull it out once a
week, plug it into an external drive cradle and run my backup script. In
the event my server is stolen, burned in a fire, wiped out by malicious
hackers or a virus, or I get drunk and delete something important... I can
recover the most important stuff, including my DB, all of my wife's
recordings (in their own storage group so I can back them up without
backing up kids shows, livetv, etc), and of course our pictures, home
videos, tax returns, etc.

If the OP is trying to if RAID is right for him, I would ask him first how
he will recover if he accidentally deletes /var, or if a pipe bursts and
fries his entire array.
