[mythtv-users] MythTV needs to listen on 2 ports

I think the community felt you were being stubborn.  What I suggested, and
others backed up, was not a network hack... it is standard practice with
layer 3 switching, it is in fact the whole point of layer 3 switches.

Again, this is stubborn adherence to a principal that is misguided.  Yes,
network pro's will assign ports to VLAN's in banks initially, usually to
simplify the initial installation.  However as time goes on, it is expected
that ports will be reassigned.  Hell, on many networks VLAN assignment is
even dynamic; for example if a machine has outdated AV software it may get
automatically moved to a restricted VLAN until it gets updated.

The fact is, the whole point of Layer 3 switching is to remove the physical
constraints of matching a machine to a particular network switch/port.

To Mark P's comment about my ignoring suggestions...  I was not ignoring, I

That said, it is your network, you are certainly free to do things the way
that makes sense to you.  I would love to hear that you embraced the
industry standard practices and let go of some of your misconceptions, but
I completely understand wanting to do things the way that feels most
comfortable to you.  I know that my home network would make even seasoned
veterans cringe... but I like it.

So, good luck with your installation, and please don't bail on the
community because of a minor disagreement.  In the end many folks took time
to try and help you find a solution to your dilemma, and if we got a bit
hot headed when you rejected them, it's only because we genuinely wanted to
help, and felt that we had wasted our time.
