FWIW, you probably don't want LC_COLLATE=C, as it will give you "broken"
sorting (i.e. not properly sorting things like n vs ñ).  You're better
off--if you're using en_US.UTF-8 for LANG--using en_US.UTF-8.

and really, you should also set LC_CTYPE or just set LC_ALL (rather than
setting the LC_* variables individually) to 'en_US.UTF-8'.  LANG is only
used as a fallback when no LC_* settings are specified--it's basically
an older (less precise) way of specifying things that's been deprecated,
so any LC_* settings will take precedence, which means things could
become broken again later when someone (i.e. the distro) specifies
LC_CTYPE or LC_ALL with values that use some other codeset.
