[mythtv-users] "phantom" subtitles on DVD

The missus bought a DVD of a 2002 TV movie she likes and I tossed it in the
Myth box so we could watch it. A bit of conversation that was hard to
understand had us reaching for the remote to turn on the subtitles. There
was nothing, though the CC's were listed on the DVD case.

I later ripped it with Makemkv. The rip showed a CC track, but neither
Mythvideo or VLC would show subtitles.

Scratching my head, I tossed the disc in our external Blu-ray player. When
I used its remote's CC button, I was given the choice of "Eng 1" or "Off"
but no subtitles showed up during dialogue after selecting ENG 1.

Am I just facing a badly authored disc?
