Unfortunately, I don't think creating it will help, see:

which should fire an error message if the directory can't be created. My
concern was that if the directory was already there and unwritable, I
didn't see an error message in housekeeper.cpp. So, I'm sticking with
plan B, running with -v file and --loglevel debug.
