It's common for TVs to send bad information--specifically to lie--in the 
EDID to try to get computers to use specific settings that the vendor 
thinks are appropriate.

Then again, it's also possible that your TV doesn't accept a 1024x768 
input, but only accepts "TV modes" and then scales it how it likes.  If 
that's the case, you'll just need to compensate for overscan (which can 
be done in X so that all applications are shown within the visible area 
or done in MythTV to affect MythTV and its windows).
