you'll need to make sure pulse audio is properly configured on your box.
if you've configured myth to use ALSA by default, it will suspend
pulse to access the ALSA device directly.
you can configure myth to use pulse too; though with SPDIF you
probably do not want that as you'd be loosing 5.1 audio

it all depends on how your pulse audio is configured ; by default you
would have a pulse daemon running, which itself must be in the audio
group . that you're user isn't , is not a problem per say as you do
user -> pulse -> audio
it's pretty rare these days that pulse isn't properly configured out
of the box though
