It is a part of many transparent proxy solutions
(and I seem to recall you can even do it with squid,
although I think you needed to use an extension for
squid to do it, but I have not followed squid closely,
so it may be integrated now).

It is performed by the proxy returning a redirect,
which then forces an authentication, and (if passed)
the proxy then redirects back to the original
target.
