And the correct syntax is, of course,

     hdhomerun_config <device> set /tuner<n>/vchannel <vchannel>

and

     hdhomerun_config <device> set /tuner<n>/channel none

The lesson here is don't hurriedly compose emails late at night right 
before going to bed. :)
