I suggest you work with the driver developers to include your
patches for timeouts.  That would help everyone (and not just
MythTV users).  You did not identify the card, but non-proprietary
cards tend to have a core set of developers that are part of the
LinuxTV project.  For all I know, your card may have already
been identified as problematic, and there is a bug report over
there.
