Put the above in a file under: /etc/mysql/conf.d, such as
mythtv-opts.cnf. Restore the contents of /etc/mysql/my.cnf
to its original value. That way if /etc/mysql/my.cnf gets
updated, your solution won't get overwritten.

(Assumes my.cnf has a line like: !includedir /etc/mysql/conf.d/
  in it. I'm not sure if your my.conf is the same as my my.cnf
  or just a typo.)
