Actually, the compiled in default storage directory used if no storage 
has been defined is in the user's home directory, since there is no 
other location MythTV can assume it should have write access. The shared 
home directory is traditionally in its own partition, isolated from the 
installed system and system logs, although distros moved away from that 
configuration several years ago.
