The "complicated" solution does have the added benefit of allowing you
to enjoy the media as you wish (i.e. with surround passed through your
television to your receiver on optical cable if that's all you have
available) as well as allowing you to "stick it to the man".

You are putting your money towards an organization that are working to
allow you to enjoy your media the way *you* want and not supporting the
copyright cartel.
