Really good to hear a positive experience, excellent.

The obvious differences for me - as I followed the wiki - are the 12.04 
vs 11.10 and the clarkdale vs sandy.  One would immediately point the 
finger at the clarkdale  was not for the fact that the VAAPI works 
perfectly with vlc in 12.04 with a myth recording.

Smart use of your h/w with the hypervisor - nice JR.  Wonderful to hear 
you have a setup working.
