Many Blu-ray players will play MPEG transport streams burned to BD-R (or to 
DVD-R, for that matter).  No particular directory or file structure is needed; 
you just need compatible video (H.264, VC-1, or MPEG-2) and audio (DTS or 
AC3).  I'm backing up my movies and TV shows on my storage array to BD-R; the 
backups are directly playable in our player (a cheapish Panasonic we bought a 
year or so ago).  I've also heard from people with Playstation 3s that similar 
discs I've burned for them have also worked.

tsMuxeR will remux your files to the proper format; there's a 
Blu-ray-compatible option you'll want to use.

For economy, you might want to transcode from MPEG-2 to H.264; you can 
probably shrink the recording enough to fit on DVD-R while maintaining pretty 
good quality.  HandBrake makes this easy.
