The script is not restricting channel numbers to three digits - it is
looking for a string of one or more digits.

Perhaps the issue is elsewhere - are your channels configured with 4
digit freqids (the field that is passed to external scripts for
channel changing)?

Have you checked the debug output the script produces when it is
called? Debug information is sent to STDOUT and /var/log/channel.log -
please check this file to see what strings the script is being called
with.
