I disagree. "Attractive" is an aesthetic quality. As in, beauty is in the
eye of the beholder. I am 98-99% happy with the main theme and OSD in
Arclight, personally. That doesn't mean that others will like it. That's
up to personal taste.

There is a technical reason, which is that it drastically reduces code
complexity. That has already been touched on. Aesthetically, there is a
reason as well. Each theme now contains the entirety of the UI experience,
and with that, it is possible and likely that each theme will end up looking
better and more cohesive.
And as always, if you want to mix and match, you can go mess around with the
XML files and essentially create your own theme from the parts of the
various themes and OSD portions of themes that you like. Such is the fun of
open source.

If it's trivial (which it is if done purely mechanically), then any user
should be able to do it without much thought. If you'd like to make a
script to help people use even less thought, that's your prerogative. The
application, however, is not the place to be expecting to be able to
customize your themes. This is not how it's done, and that's not likely to
change.
