I've just tried mythweb and there's no such limitation on hard padding
values.when creating a recording rule, and in fact the times are
entered in minutes rather than seconds.

When I record F1 I have a 'record before show starts' of 55 minutes,
because there's an hour of programme before the start of the race; and
I set that up using the frontend.  With football I add over an hour to
matches liable to extra time.

I don't have access to a frontend here but I'm sure I've created these
type of rules from the frontend, in MythTV versions from 0.18 to 0.25.

Are you looking at the default hard-padding settings (which will
affect recording rules you create in the future but which won't modify
existing rules)?  Possibly these have a restriction?  Or are you
looking at the scheduling options for an individual programme
recording rule?
