I seem to remember that somewhere in the settings you can set the size of the HD ring buffer. Especially as you said you can record and watch the show at the same time with no problems, it sounds to me like your ring buffer may be set too small.

I can think of a couple differences between LiveTV and Recordings. You can configure different storage locations for Live TV and Recordings. You can have different Recording Profiles for LIveTV and Recordings.  Not sure what else could be different.  Does pausing for a few seconds and resuming help at all?
