Thanks for the info! Now if we can only solve the OP's problem..

mythfrontend audio definitely needs to go to "ALSA:default" in your
case. asound.conf sends the default to the HDMI.

It could be a sample rate issue ie. your HDMI receiver can't
understand the sample rate myth is sending at. I'd try a config using
the plug plugin first, then fall back to the rate plugin to force the
rate.  (even though it's supposedly not as good as mythfrontend it's
still better than silence :) )

Failing that I haven't the foggiest. I run JYA's 0.22-fixes with the
audio patches that got left out of the 0.22 release. I use the config
you posted and mythfrontend goes to ALSA:default. HDMI audio "just
works" for me.
