Is the frontend using an IP address for the backend or a hostname?  If
it's using a hostname, try doing a:

dig hostname

or

host hostname

dig comes from the "dnsutils" package and host comes from the
"bind9-host" package on ubuntu.  It should respond immediately.

If it's using an IP address, then it's not a DNS issue unless mythtv
does a reverse dns lookup when an IP address connect, but I'm *pretty*
sure it doesn't.
