PULSE IS STEREO ONLY BY DEFAULT
AC3, DTS won't work.

This is an issue with the ALSA drivers, that's the behaviour you saw
earlier, it's still going to be like that after...
Looks like your IEC958 device is muted by default....
If you did what I've been trying to tell you from the beginning, it
could solve your issue.
Select the SPDIF port in the list of audio device.
It's the IEC958 ALSA:iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 if using spdif
or
ALSA:front:card=HDMI if using the HDMI connection
and ... once again.
