Thank you Micheal for the true description of the soft padding.

So basically for my system, I just put in the hard padding on shows
that get recorded on the digital tuner with multirec.  So even back to
back shows will both get recorded with the padding.  However, for my
analog only shows, I only have a single tuner, and it will suffice to
let the "soft" padding work where available, and back to back
recordings will still function.
