[mythtv-users] Encoding

2 GB in 43 minutes is around 6 Mbits/second. It is common for MPEG2 to be
between 4 and 10 Mbits/second for SD.

I use MythTVs transcoder to transcode almost everything into MPEG4. The
final result plays with both mplayer and the internal player (and even VLC
on Windows).
I have set the bitrate to 1.4 Mbits/second, which is for 640x480 pixels. The
shows are actually 720x576, so the resulting bitrate is 1.9 Mbit/second. The
result is usually very good, except for some live shows, that can be quite
noisy. 1.9 Mbit/second is about one-third of your current 2 GB/43 minutes.
