Thanks Allen (& Raymond). Customising the EDID file did the trick.

As it happens, I already have digital sound (routed to my receiver). It 
worked out of the box with MythBuntu Jaunty - except for running 
alsamixer to unmute iec958. But thanks for the reference to your howto.
