Yes, it was the 2nd time, in that I watched a 480i recording first which
worked, and then a 1080i which was black, and everything was black after
that.  Does something make it reset so that you can get a "first time"
again?

It's nice for running google earth and a few other programs, but by and
large not too many.  If I were a gamer, I would want to game on my
nice 1080p monitor, but I'm not.   I had also heard that the 8400
and its ilk could not do the very best deinterlacing.   

I am not rushing, the picture's pretty good now though of course I
would always like better.   One of the other reasons I was interested
in vdpau is that sometimes downloaded h264 1080 line videos are simply too 
much for the p4-3ghz, even in xine or mplayer (which used to sometimes do
better than nvp but I don't know if that's still true.)  This forced me to
go watch those movies in the office.  Bleh.

If vdpau will deliver quality 1080i and non-stuttering h264-1080p30, then
it's worth the hassle, which means buying both a new PCI video card, and
also a PVR USB2 to replace the pvr-150 I will kick out of the pci slot.
(Though I may find another solution to that.)  And the time to get it
working, of course.

Of course the other alternative would be a whole new machine, but that's
pretty radical, since I can't replace the mobo in the SFF, I would be
replacing everything but the drives!   Even the cheapest new machine
today would have dual cores, ddr2, lower wattage and pci-e of course.

The Sparkle 9400 gt 512mb is $80, there is a pny 8400gs for $49 after rebate
and a sparkle for $55 no rebate and an 8500gt for $70 but only 256mb.
Some have suggested here that the good dinterlacers need more than
256mg of video card ram.   Is that true?
