Thanks for the pointers guys. I checked my lircrc and found two entries for "playpause", which explains why I couldn't pause anything. That's one annoying niggle squashed. I'm going to play further with the lirc config and see if I can stabilise the DVico. If not, I shall go for the Hauppage I think. As I have a Harmony remote, I'd just want the USB receiver, and the remote would go in the drawer with all the others!

Anybody know if the Hauppage transmitter will send up/down volume signals to my amp? The lirc documentation suggests that the transmitted commands supported might only go as far as the numbers, to support channel changing on a STB.
