Ultimately, all hardware vendors should allow end users to enter
some sort of administrative mode and directly configure the hardware.
IOW, all modern video cards should allow for being used 1994 style 
with the user specifying everything. Honoring custom modelines would
solve a lot of these issues. It would not be a "nice" or "easy" solution
but it would at least be a solution.

nvidia cards are the only problem. Intel chipsets have similar issues.
It all pretty much boils down to only really allowing PnP configuration
and completely ignoring manual configuration.

TVs also have a bad habit of outputing gibberish pnp information.
