The 0 byte file is what happens when Myth gets no data at all from the 
capture card.  I'd recommend checking your card configuration (possibly 
with http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/264034#264034 ) 
and/or testing the card with a different program, such as the dvbutils 
programs.
