I use DVDs.  They work and work well, but since you don't want that and you
haven't indicated a budget, I would consider a portable car mount DVD player
that has A/V inputs (most do) and then a video iPod.  You get the advantage
of supporting DVD so you can still use your commercial and burned DVDs plus
you can just serve the content from the iPod which is well support with the
myth2ipod script and others.

It's not the cheapest solution but as I've consider quite a few, it seems to
be the best.
