Type this:
aplay -l

see which device is the digital output, say it is N

Then
iecset audio N
iecset -x

Then see what AES0 is

Sorry for leaving this out. My understanding is not complete, but
improving.

Her is what I get with these commands:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
   Subdevices: 1/1
   Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
   Subdevices: 1/1
   Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
$ iecset audio 1
Mode: consumer
Data: audio
Rate: 48000 Hz
Copyright: protected
Emphasis: none
Category: PCM coder
Original: original
Clock: 1000 ppm
$ iecset -x
AES0=0x00,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x00,AES3=0x02
$
