Using those settings I get no sound, and mythfrontend outputs this:

2008-07-07 10:53:26.343 TV: Attempting to change from None to WatchingPreRecorded
2008-07-07 10:53:26.443 DPMS Deactivated
2008-07-07 10:53:28.753 Opening audio device 'spdif'. ch 6(2) sr 48000
2008-07-07 10:53:28.754 Opening ALSA audio device 'spdif'.
2008-07-07 10:53:28.756 AudioOutput Error: Channels count (6) not available: Invalid argument
2008-07-07 10:53:28.756 AudioOutput Error: Unable to set ALSA parameters
2008-07-07 10:53:28.758 NVP: Disabling Audio, reason is: Unable to set ALSA parameters

running the commands you suggested produces the following:

[root at mythback scott]# iecset audio 1
control "IEC958 Playback Default" (index -1) not found
[root at mythback scott]# iecset -x
control "IEC958 Playback Default" (index -1) not found

Any thoughts?

P.S. Thank you for all your help so far.

I would be curious if the setup that worked for me on Mythbuntu 8.04
works for you. I get similar level bit pure spdif output for TV and
Music. Nothing else that was recommended or in any of the wiki gave me
this.

Try this:

Audio output device: ALSA:spdif
Passthrough output device: ALSA:iec958:(AESO 0x02)
Max Audio Channels: Stereo
Upmix: passive
Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough CHECKED
Enable DTS to SPDIF passthrough CHECKED
Use internal volume NOT CHECKED
Aggressive sound NOT CHECKED

/etc/X11/asound.conf REMOVED (or renamed)
~/.asouncrc REMOVED (or renamed)

Also, if you issue these commands:
iecset audio 1
iecset -x

You should see AES0 0x02 somewhere in this last output. If you don't,
you might want to try changing the Passthrough to whatever your card says.

Let me know what happens.

Allen
