Gregg, have you got this issue solved yet?
A working solution for FC8 with SB live  5.1 is  just a one liner in 
~/.asoundrc
echo "pcm.!default spdif" > ~/.asoundrc
and in mythv general setup: ALSA:*plug*:iec958
