But what control is xine set to change?  I.e. what's the value for:

# alsa mixer device
# string, default: PCM
#audio.device.alsa_mixer_name:PCM

in ~/.xine/config .  Mine (the above) is commented, indicating the 
setting is at its default value (PCM), which happens to be what I want.  
MPlayer has its own setting for the mixer control used for volume (as 
does Myth), so it's possible it may "work" in some but not in others.
