Ralph,
    I had an issue with the encoder chip on my pvr250 overheating my old 
case. I stuck an old 486 heatsink onto it and it helped reduce how often 
it happened
Instead of rebooting, I had made a script to unload the driver and 
reload it.
This problem went away when I upgraded to case with better airflow
