not completely true...

there sort of is, AMD is working on it, but it is nowhere near the
level of beta that VDPAU is at. On the other hand, from what I
understand, its more "open" than VDPAU, so in theory AMD would have to
figure out how VDPAU commands work to write a compat driver whereas
NVidia could easily take whatever AMD comes up with and incorporate it
into their drivers. Of course, first-to-market technologies generally
have an advantage, especially when their hardware is has a larger
market share to begin with.

Plus one of the NVidia founders graduated from my Alma Mater, so I'm
rooting for them ;-)
