I tried for days to get the two compiled instances of lirc to work and
I never could get it to work. I think I got the same error as you.
There was a very good web site called lircsetup.com that's no longer
there but luckily someone has archived it. Basically, you're running
one instance of lirc and you're creating two sockets (one for the
remote and one for the Blaster). It works very well and sets up
quickly.
