I just bought a new Onkyo last weekend (my 8 yr old one fried in a
recent power failure).  7.1 Surround, dual HDMI in with HDMI out that
upconverts from whatever input you give it (thus, only the HDMI goes
to the TV)...and yes, it will take Audio over HDMI -or- accept S/PDIF.
 It also has multiple digital audio inputs that are by default linked
to the HDMI (ie, when you switch one, it switches both).

The long and the short being yes, it definately depends on your setup.
 I would love to run audio over HDMI (when I go HD, anyway), as it
would reduce cabling.  However, either way will work fine.
