Sorry, it is still pretty early for me, and I did not read you whole email.

1. download latest lirc
2. unpack it somwhere
3. run "configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --with-driver=imon"
4. run "make && make install" as root
5. run "modprobe lirc_imon" to load module
6. run "lircd"
7. run "irrecord /tmp/test-remote" to see if IR receiver reacts on your remote.

if it does not ... sorry ... you should exchange remote or you could
try to replace internal IR receiver, which is complicated.
